Creating a Voltan Character
There are a few things to keep in mind when
creating a Voltan persona for your self. Voltans are mainly descended from
Barbarian tribes. Honor is very important. The giving of an oath is a most
serious thing. It is a warrior culture. Both men and women are expected to be
able to defend themselves, their family, and the Duchy if needed. Regardless of
what area of Volta you are from, to be Voltan is to be a warrior, mo matter if
you use an axe, sword or magic - as an adventurer, you are looked upon with
respect as a Voltan warrior. Keep in mind however, since Volta is part of the
Tyrran campaign setting you can make a character from anywhere on Tyrra and play
them in Volta.
Regions
of Volta
Volta is composed of four Baronies, each with
their own flavor and slight variance in customs.
-
Zarkym is similar to Saxon era England. This means their citizens are a little more
civilized than other Voltans; however they retain a few of their more "barbarous" customs.
Commoners from Zarkym are generally craftsmen, tradesmen, and merchants.
-
Anym
has a very Celtic (Irish/Welsh) feel to it. The people of this
region have a fondness for the arts. Many skilled bards and storytellers
come from this area, but don't be mistaken - they love a good fight.
-
Cathym
is much like a fantasy version of Viking age Scandinavia. This is
the area that most outsiders think of when they think of Volta.
-
Dinsdale
is home to many Highlander clans and has a history of great
political turmoil.
Races
of Volta
All of the races that make up Volta share many
similar mannerisms and beliefs that make them all uniquely 'Voltan'. The Warrior
Code, oath breaking, freeman-ship over serfdom, general good naturedness, these
and many other subtleties make them all 'Voltan'. So, if you are playing a
Voltan native, understand that it's not just geography, but a lifestyle and
state of mind.
-
Barbarians
are found all over Volta, but most commonly in and around the Frost Peak
Mountains.
-
Biata
are found in small numbers throughout Volta; however there are a few
small Biata villages in the northern Frost Peaks.
-
Drae
or
Dark Elves
are a rare sight except for a few settlements near the border of Avendale to
the north, inhabited by the Shizobi, who have a more barbarous way than the
more cultured Drae of Nebulonde or Draelonde. Otherwise, there are a few
families that have settled around Volta as gem smiths and jewelers.
-
Dwarves are most numerous in the Anymdin Mountains , where they mine copper
and small quantities of precious metals.
-
Elves
are not very common in Volta except for several substantial
settlements of Wild Elves in the Icewood Forest.
-
Gypsy
tribes freely roam the roads of Volta, usually serving as mercenary
guards for merchants and travelers to ensure the free flow of news from all
corners of Volta.
-
Half Orcs and Half Ogres are
not uncommon in Dinsdale and Cathym and have strong clans.
-
Hoblings, what few there are, can almost entirely be found in Anym, thriving
on the rich artistic environment of the region.
-
Humans
are the most common race in Volta, and are as varied in their
mannerisms and professions as anywhere on Tyrra. However, all abide by
common Voltan sensibilities and superstitions.
-
Mystic Wood Elves
are also not uncommon, but are primarily found in Zarkym given their racial
tendencies as skilled craftsmen.
-
Sarr are very rare to see in Volta. Those that do live in Volta live in
very small family groups away from settlements and keep to themselves,
living off the land.
-
Scavenger
races are very common in the Arran Hills and Hadran Woods. They are often
employed as scouts and animal handlers.
